More Than One Way To Tan

There are three basic ways to achieve a tan and there are tanning lotions to assist you in every way. In truth there is only one way to achieve a real tan and the other two types are fake tans that temporarily give coloration to your skin. There are bronzers which act like a makeup on the skin and then there are tanning lotions that cause a chemical reaction on the skin to cause the production of color.

For people who would not be caught dead using a fake tanning product, it is important that safety remains the first priority. The many dangers of excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays have long been documented and still people fall into the trap of being addicted to tanning beds.

For anyone who chooses to attempt a natural tan there are accelerators that can help speed up the process. These indoor tanning lotions are very good at moisturizing the skin and it is the additional moisture in the skin that makes it better at absorbing UV rays.

One of the safest ways to produce a little color on the skin is with a DHA based product. Tanning lotions or sprays that use DHA do nothing to alter any biological effects of the body which is why it is safer than other methods of sunless tanning. The dead skin cell is simply stained with the chemical and since the dead skin sheds regularly, the tan comes off naturally with time.

A bronzer is similar to fake tanning lotions but instead of using DHA to change the color of dead skin cells, this product simply adds the color on top of the skin. Much like makeup, bronzers can be washed off at the end of the day.

However a person chooses to tan their skin it is always important that the consumer is aware of all the risks involved with each method. Following instructions on labels is only the first part of being safe. Tanning lotions and other products tend to react differently on different skin so test and be caution with anything new.

The Many Types of Tanning Lotions

There are three kinds of indoor tanning lotion. Each lotion works differently to achieve the same result in slightly different ways. Basically the lotions are to help during the indoor tanning process. Accelerators, bronzers, and tingle lotions are the three main types of indoor tanning lotions.

Accelerators are the most common of tanning lotions. While it can contain other ingredients such as mineral oils and amino acids to help speed up the tanning process the most universal ingredient is the moisturizing content of the lotion. This keeps the skin moist which is known to improve melanin production which is what tanning is all about.

Tingle lotions are also used to improve the speed of tanning but by increasing the blood flow to the skin. This causes the user to feel a tingle in their skin and is not for first time tanners who are not experienced with this type of lotion. It can cause skin problems such as swelling and irritation.

A bronzer is just a lotion that adds color directly onto the skin. It works like makeup in that it is simply a cover up and washes off at the end of the day. The skin is stained with a bronzer but the risk is that clothing could also becomes stained. As a complement to actual tanning the additional color helps absorb and even out the tanning result.

But a bronzer does more than just act as a temporary color cover up. It helps in the tanning process because the darker tones absorb the UV light rays to slightly speed up the tanning process on the skin. This is usually not the purpose, however, that people use bronzers but it is often included in most tanning lotions.

There are lotions, such as tingle lotions, that should be left for advanced tanners. Most people will use choose the accelerator since it is the most common of indoor tanning lotions.
