What are the Signs and Symptoms of Acne?

by Richard May

Acne is a very common skin complaint, which not only affects teenagers but quite a few adults as well. It is caused when the too much sebum (oil) is produced and causes the pores on the skin to become blocked. Certainly if left untreated not only is it unsightly but also can if severe enough lead to scarring on a person's skin. Below we take a look at the acne signs and symptoms.

In most cases acne normally appears on a person's face, but it can also appear on their chest, neck, shoulders and back as well. These are all areas of their body where they have glands that can produce oil. When it does appear acne can take various different forms and below we describe what these are.

1. In most cases the first sign of acne is when white head or black heads begin to erupt on the person's skin. Known as Comedones by medical professionals these are produced at the hair follicle openings that will have become blocked because the body is secreting too much oil and this prevents dead skin cells from leaving the body. Also there is an increased risk that these can become infected as bacteria may well be prevented from being eliminated from the body also.

2. Papules these are small raised bumps, which appear on the skin and have been caused because the hair follicles have become inflamed or infected. In many cases as well as being red in color they are often tender to touch also.

3. Another form of acne that some people may get is pustules that are very similar to Papules but will have a white tip, which contains pus. This pus is made up of bacteria which if allowed to come into contact of other areas of skin can cause further eruptions of acne.

4. Nodules are much larger and solid lumps that are found beneath the surface of the skin and are very painful. These are actually caused because the oil has been able to build up deep inside the hair follicle.

5. The final form of acne that some people may well suffer from and which is the worse of all the symptoms is the Cysts. These just like the Nodules are large and painful but contain large amounts of pus (containing bacteria) as well. If left untreated then these can cause further permanent damage (scarring) to that person's skin.

If you choose to leave the acne untreated this can not only lead to further outbreaks, but may well also lead to more serious damage to your skin as well. If at any time you notice you are suffering from certain acne signs and symptoms then it is advisable to seek medical assistance as soon as you can. A doctor may well find that there is some other underlying cause for your problem and this will also need to be treated along with the acne.

Acne Treatment and Holistic Medicine

by Richard May

Essentially acne is an internal condition that is caused by several factors. But people only seem to think about the external acne factors and the signs of acne on the skin. These external factors can also hinder the healing process of acne and with these factors existing, it can be extremely difficult to overcome your condition. It is known that holistic acne remedies are not as effective if the acne is evolving and live.

As you are probably aware, there are a number of skin cleansers available designed for various purposes, such as exfoliation and medicate. However there are some simple things you can do which can be just as effective, for example washing your face twice a day using an anti-bacterial 100% natural soap.

Therefore you can try using 100 percent natural facial soaps, those which are anti-bacterial and antiseptic are even better. Soaps which are based on tea tree oils can have a very positive effect on your skin and reduce some of the common acne symptoms. If you buy some soaps such as this then try to wash with them twice a day for maximum effectiveness.

Try to get into the routine of steaming before washing your face. Doing this can have a very good effect on the skin over a period of time. Wet the soap using lukewarm water and then apply the soap to your face gently using your fingertips. Try to do this in a circular motion and be careful not to rub any of the soap into your eyes. Then wash your face gently and pat the skin down using a soft cotton towel to dry yourself. Remember not to wash your face too much which can increase the chances of causing irritation.

A great tip for sufferers of acne is to try and improve their intake of pure water. Drinking 10 glasses of water a day can really help not only in your skin care but also for your overall health. This is commonly known as a way of internally improving your acne as it can help balance the oil secretion of the body.

In relation to external factors, you will probably be more familiar with these and how to overcome them. One good example is aloe vera cream which when used regularly, can reduce dryness and soreness of the skin. This is much more effective than using un-natural acne treatments which an have a negative effect on acne affected skin.

Acne sufferers often suffer from an excess of oil on the skin combined with large pores. This is often caused by a hormonal imbalance which consequently means that the sebaceous glands produce too much oil. If this is the case with you, you can start to treat this problem by firstly not using water and alcohol astrigent. Instead of this, try to find a neutrogena soap. In particular neutrogena clear pore oil controlling astrigent which can have a very good affect on your acne condition. Apart from this you could also use a natural mask composed of egg whites or bentonitre.

If you are someone who has sensitive skin, then the best thing to do is to try out each treatment prior to using it fully. Just use a very small amount on a small area of skin, by doing this you will be able to work out if the treatment will cause you problems if you were to use it on larger areas that are affective by acne. Also remember that there are now holistic medicine and acne treatments to control your acne which are available below.
