Acne Realities
We know that acne is caused by body oils and dead skin blocking the skin's pores. So, a lot of the things you may have learned about what creates acne is not true.
To start with, that means that eating greasy foods like pizza, bacon, French fries or potatoes chips will not affect your acne either way. Neither will consuming chocolate or drinking any kind of carbonated soda pop. Putting on make-up is also not likely going to affect your skin, especially if the make-up is the oil-free.
If your mom and/or dad had problems with acne as teens, you very likely will also. But, for most people, by the time they begin to grow into their twenties, it has already begun to go away. There are some things that can be done to minimize an acne outbreak. Be sure to wash your face with warm water and a mild face soap once in the morning and also at night before bed. Do not use a facecloth, as it could be too tough on your face and so aggravate your already tender skin - use your hands instead.
Anything that you place on your face, including your makeup, sunscreen, or moisturizer needs to be free of oil. Be sure to always remove all of your makeup prior to going to bed. When you work out in any way and you are sweating because of it, make sure your clean your face.
Keep your hair away from you face. Your hair contains its own oils and you do not want them rubbing onto your face. Be sure you wash your hair on a regular basis to avoid the oils aggravating your skin.
If you use any hair care products like sprays or gels to keep your hair in place, do your best to keep these off your face. This is because they can also block your pores. If you have to wear caps or hats, be aware that they do not encourage acne along the hairline.
Another important thing to remember is not to touch your face excessively. Touching transfers the dirt and oils from your hands to your face. Equally important is to refrain from picking, touching, popping or squeezing the pimples which can cause them to get much worse.
You will find lots of different acne medications at your corner drug store. There are lots to choose from and you might find that what might work for your best friend may do nothing for you. The best will contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid in them. This will help to dry out the skin and shrink the offending pimples. Be sure you follow the directions carefully. Don't overuse the products or you may injure your skin.
If you can't find something that works over-the-counter, visit your dermatologist who will be able to prescribe something stronger.
